Having loved La Palisiada, I was curious about the people who worked on it, including Alina Panasenko who worked on the writing. Valeriia Sochyvets, an amazing producer, didn't impress me much with her short film "Blood", but Panasenko's short is lovely. Unfortunately, much of what I could say has been said by nastya tumys’: the film is very authentic, blurring the line between cinéma direct and fiction. That said, it has the hallmarks of many amateurish Ukrainian shorts: sudden cuts, handheld cameras, extreme closeups. It is a stylistic trait, not so much a flaw. It feels as though so many of these Ukrainian films inhabit a same artistic universe. Artistic leitmotivs are repeated across Ukrainian films: realism, individuality, gestures and traditions, fragments, the unique identity of space. And this film is about the space, the feeling of Kyiv's underground, the fragment of a larger metropolitan existence. Another Ukrainian gem. My heart bleeds knowing that so much will be lost due to the genocidal invasion of Ukraine. Careers will be derailed, talents destroyed. There is such love and tenderness in the depiction of Ukrainian daily life, from The Diviners to Opera Glasses. My heart aches, knowing that this world is in some ways lost. I donate to the Ukrainian army to safeguard Ukraine and Europe, to safeguard this precious world.
